Introduction
The
Jewett Creek watershed is 5,384 acres, and consists of Jewett Creek and
it's two main tributaries, Dry Creek and Spring Creek. A variety of wildlife
is present in the watershed including black-tailed deer, California
quail, red-tailed hawks, western rattlesnakes, Stellar jays, western gray
squirrels and many more. It is also home to a small population of
coho salmon, steelhead, cutthroat and brook trout.
Jewett Creek is adjacent to urban, residential, agricultural, and forest
land, and flows through the cities of White Salmon and Bingen, Washington.
The waterway begins in the Snowden area and flows 4 miles to a confluence
with the Columbia River. The lower reaches are used as an outdoor classroom
by the students of Whitson Elementary. Here they conduct stream monitoring
tests and release coho salmon that they raise in their classroom
during the year.
