GEOWEB DAMS
Northwest
Service Academy/AmeriCorps Restoration Team forms a 'bucket brigade' for
construction of a grade control structure 'check dam' to reduce erosion
and increase water retention.

Snyder
Swale is at the headwaters, the upper areas of a watershed, of the Klickitat
River. Because of non-sustainable practices of the past and present such
as cattle grazing, logging, and road building, the area has changed drastically
from its past state. Due to these practices the water cycle has been
altered where water retention has decreased and erosion has increased.
In an
effort to slow erosion and retain water, grade control structures or 'check
dams' are built. They effectively dissipate running water and 'check'
flood events.
